Add New Product in Shopify

In order to add a product to Shopify you will need access to:

  • Product info (SKU's, UPC, sizes, stock, description, pricing, etc.)
  • Product attatchments (product pictures, digital download files, etc.)
  • Shopify log in credentials

To add a new product in shopify follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the backend of the shopify site (acquire log in info from IT).
  2. Click Products in the left hand bar.
  3. Click Add Product in the upper right hand corner.
  4. Input product name into Title field.
  5. Input product description into Description field.
  6. Add photos, to do this either:
    1. Drag and drop the picture file(s) into the drop files to upload field. or
    2. Click upload file and locate the file manually.
  7. Input price in the price field.
  8. Select or deselect the Charge taxes on this product field. Note: This is site specific so make sure you are selecting the correct option.
  9. Input SKU into the SKU field.
  10. Input UPC into the Barcode field.
  11. Click drop down menu in the Inventory policy field.
    1. Click Don't track inventory if the product is digital.
    2. Click Track inventory if the product is physical. Note: If you plan on adding variants: keep in mind the preferences for the parent product will be the same for all of the variants.
  12. Input the weight of the product into the Weight category. If your product is digital simply click the This product requires shipping field.
  13. Input Vender and Product type in their respective fields. These fields are in the right hand column in a section labelled Organization. Note: Collections and bundles are built around the name in the Product type field so make sure the product type corresponds to the other elements of the website.
  14. Input any collections associated with the product into the Collections field.
  15. Tag the product with relevant tags (Letter of authors name, item colors, Album name, etc.) this is also very site specific so make sure your tags are relevant to site content.

Adding variants to a product:

  1. Click the add variant button
  2. Input the variant type in the Option Name field. Note: For clothing or apparel this may be size or color, whereas for an album this could be the format (Digital download, vinyl, etc.).
  3. Input the different types of the first variant in the Option Values field. If your first variant is Size the option values will be Small, Medium, Large, etc.
  4. Repeat steps 2 & 4 if your product requires a secondary variant. Clothing, for example, may come in different sizes and colors which will necessitate two variants. The example I include is an album that the client has requested each song be made available as an eSingle. shopify add productNote: If you want all of your secondary variant options (the second one) to apply to all of your primary (the first one) variant options than list out all of your secondary variant options at this stage; this is good for clothing and similar products. If you only want your secondary variant options to apply to one of the primary variant options, as in the case of song names for digital singles, then follow the instructions below.
  5. Input in the name of the album in the name field.
  6. Click save. 
    1. Click add variant at the top right of the variant section. add variant button
    2. Click on the eSingle variant.
    3. Input content into respective fields. Note: If you have created your parent product with these steps in mind you will not need to modify the shipping and inventory sections!
    4. Make sure all of the information is correct.
    5. Click the duplicate button.
    6. Modify SKU and the name of this eSingle (I just go from track 1 and work my way down).
    7. Click save.
    8. Repeat the previous three steps (7-9) until all of the tracks on the album have an eSingle variant devoted to them.
    9. Click back to product.
  7. Apply the album photo to all of the variants:
    1. Select the square in the upper lefthand corner of the variant section shopify bulk actions
    2. Click bulk actions.
    3. Click update images.
    4. Select the image of the album cover.
    5. Click save Note: If there is an autographed album, a Vinyl, different color clothing or any variant that looks different from the parent product you will need to include a picture of it.
    6. Add secondary pictures (if needed) to the Images section.
    7. Drag the secondary pictures to the corresponding product's picture icon (on left).

Attaching Digital Music Files to Product in Shopify:

  1. Click the three dot tab in the upper right hand corner.
  2. Click Add Digital Attachment.
  3. Click the upload file button next to a track listing or digital album that doesn't have a file attached.
  4. Locate and select the associated audio file.
  5. Repeat as necessary.
  6. Click View in your shopify admin button.
