Test Configurations

Conduct tests to confirm that all configurations are set up properly.

Test Shipping Configurations

Testing shipping configurations requires a bit of creativity, as you need to first review the shipping configurations for the site. Many sites use Table rates, so you should choose various combinations of products to produce various weight configurations to validate that the shipping rates assigned to various weights work properly.

Confirming Table Rates

Before testing shipping calculations for table rates, you should review the table rate configurations in Shopify to confirm that:
  • There are no gaps in weights. For example, if you have rates for 0 - 2 pounds and 3 - 5 pounds, the rates will fail when an order weighs 2.5 pounds. The proper configuration would be 0 - 2 pounds and 2.01 - 5 pounds, or 0 - 2.99 and 3 - 5 pounds.
  • Check the maximum weight allowed on the chart. Shopify will not allow calculations for weights above the maximum noted in the rate table.
  • Make sure that all destination countries or regions are configured. "Rest of the World" applies to any country or region not specifically designated with its own rates.

Testing Addresses

To test various shipping calculations, you need to enter various destinations in the Shopping Cart page (for this test, you do not need to go to the Checkout page).

For each test, note the weights of various products within the backend. Add various combinations of products and note their combined weight so you can confirm the shipping amounts that should display.

Use the following combinations for testing. Feel free to try others you know, as well:

  • United States, California 92009
  • United States, Texas 77469
  • United States, Massachusetts 02093
  • United States, Hawaii 96813
  • Canada, Ontario M7A 2A1
  • United Kingdom, SE1 2AA
  • Russia, Moscow 107031
  • China, 101300
  • India, Maharashtra 400001
  • Australia, New South Wales 2000

Test Payment Configurations

During Onboarding, the Shopify payment gateway is set for testing using what Shopify calls the "Bogus Gateway."

This gateway allows us to test three different scenarios for checking out:

  • An Approved Transaction
  • A Declined Transaction
  • A Failure of the Payment Gateway

Testing an Approved Transaction

  1. Add items to a shopping cart.
  2. Go to the site Checkout page.
  3. Fill out customer information. Enter in various invalid information to test field validation. For instance, put in your email address without the "@" or ".com" and make sure the system throws an error message. Do the same by leaving out required fields.
  4. When you get to the payment method:
    1. Card number 1.
    2. Expiry Any date in the future (you should also test past dates for error trapping).
    3. CVV Any 3 digit number.
  5. Click Place my order.

You should get a successful order message.

Testing an Unapproved Transaction

Use the same process above, but enter "2" for the Card number.

Testing a Gateway Failure

Use the same process above, but enter "3" for the Card number.

Reporting Results

When conducting these tests, please record your results in the Task comments within the TeamWork project. If any tests fail, the Project Manager can create subtasks or add comments assigned to team members to fix. Any fixes need to be re-tested.

Note: NEVER proceed beyond Onboarding until the configurations set in this phase are thoroughly tested and any fixes are validated.
